Worst Weather Events

1. Which weather events kill the most Americans?

  • Flooding
3. Are your answers to those two questions different? Why or why not?
  • Yes my answers are different to the two questions because the two are to different weather conditions that happen in the world.
4. Read this article. Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?
  • I agree for there to be a week of flood awareness so that Americans can know the dangerous that occur during a flood. With knowing this information you are safe during a flood and know how to react to different problems.
5. For your response to #1, find three weather events. Describe what happened (how severe was the storm, did anyone get hurt or die, how much property damage, include pictures, etc.).
  • On August 28th, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the southern coast of the United States with devastating effect. It was reported that more then 1,800 people lost there lives, and more then $81 billion dollars in damages occurred.
  • Hurricane Ike was the third most destructive hurricane to ever make landfall in the United States. It was the ninth named storm, fifth hurricane
  • and third major hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. It was Cape Verde-type hurricane, Ike was blamed for at least 195 deaths.

4 Essential Questions

  1. What, specifically about your topic, are you going to research? How steam pollution affects our great lakes.
  2. What conclusions did you come to? What do you recommend average citizens do to make a difference? Be specific. This is the main part of your assignment. The conclusion that I came up with was to let citizen know the risk of what will happen in steam pollution dose not stop or any other pollution. The average citizen can make a difference by stopping how much that they litter or to petition against factories that pollute the air and water supply and finding was to make products that will not hurt are water supply. The main part of the assignment is to find information that will help inform people on steam pollution and to find ways to stop or lessen this type of pollution.
  3. What would happen if, worst-case scenario, nobody listened to your recommendations? The worst-case scenario if nobody list to my recommendations people will get really sick or the animals that live in are great lakes might die off and with this happening in the water there will be more contamination' in our water supply.
  4. What would happen if, best-case scenario, everybody listened to your recommendations? If everybody listened to my recommendations animals will be saved from sicknesses and are water supply will be safer for everyone.

Earth Hour

1. What do the organizers of Earth Hour want everyone to do at 8:30 PM?

The organizers of the Earth Hour want everyone to turn off there lights and other electronics for an hour.


2. What is the point?

The point of Earth Hour is to conserve energy and to act against global warming.


3. When was the first Earth Hour?

The first Earth Hour was in Sidney in 2007.


4. The website talks about the big upcoming election: Planet Earth vs. Global Warming. How would one vote for Planet Earth? How would one vote for Global Warming?

I would vote for Planet Earth by turning off lights in my house and using nothing that uses electricity i would also try to convince others to do the same by posters and letters. A person who votes for Global Warming by using electricity during this hour and using things are charged with electricity.

Five things that we could do during Earth Hour to celebrate during this event are turn of the lights in your house,turn of cell phones, turn off ipods,turn off computer,turn off air conditioner.

Dating Methods

Relative dating is the process by which rocks are placed in their proper order;Only the chronological order of events is determined,not the absolute age in years.

2. When would a geologist use radiometric dating?
Geologist use radiometric dating to calculate the ages of rock minerals that contain certain radioactive isotopes.

3. When would a geologist use radiocarbon dating?
A geologist would use radiocarbon dating to determine age by comparing the amount of carbon-14 to the amount of carbon-12 in a sample.

4. Explain how you can use tree rings to date and study the recent past? (see p. 351)
The tree rings show of many seasons the three have went through and the way the rings look you can conclude if the tree was dead or live.

5. What is half-life?
Half-Life is the amount of time necessary for one half of the nuclei in a a sample of decay to its stable isotope.

What are potentially more dangerous to people: volcanoes or earthquakes? Why?
  • Earthquakes are more dangerous to people due to its shaking of the ground which causes major destruction.

This earthquake was a magnitude of 9.5 and killed 32,290 people. The coast of repairs was 500 million dollars.





Location-Anchorage

Date-March 28,1964

This earthquake had a magnitude of 9.2 which killed 131 people. The coast of repairs for this earthquake was 500 million dollars.





Location-Tokyo

Date-September 1,1923

This earthquake had a magnitude of 8.3 and it also killed over 140,000 people.

Three things that I have learned are was that there was an earthquake in Rwanda's Western Province, this earthquake claimed dozens of lives and homes, there is also a reconstruction of homes that a spouse to happen this mount.

Two things that I found interesting was how the earthquake happened in 2008 and the government collected money and only twenty-five homes have been rebuilt, I also found it interesting how many homes and schools where destroyed and how many lives where claimed.

Two things that I found interesting where that tsunamis are not a single wave but are a wave train, I also found it interesting how accumulated seismic energy causes tsunamis.

One question I still have is can a tsunami be stoped by adding water to shallow water to make the water the same so the tsunami cant build speed.
